Blog 26: My personal narrative (4/15/2024)

While studying abroad, a situation I had to overcome was learning to live with my roommates. Living with new people is usually a struggle for me, and it definitley was not an easy feat here. While having to share a room with one of my friends, I also added 4 other roommates that I had never met before. After quickly realizing they are not people I would typically choose to live with, I had to overcome this emotion, as I would be spending a lot of time with them. I was able to travel the world with these girls, and as I spent more time with them, I became much more open-minded and patient with them. This experience with my new roommates taught me to be calm and patient when working with new people.

Blog 25: My abroad takeaway (4/15/2024)

Through my experience abroad, I have learned so many new things about myself. I have learned new social skills, learned how to manage many different situations, and become well-versed in a new language. While I am still not fluent in Spanish, I feel that my experience here has made me become much more proficient in the language. Although there were many ups and downs of living and studying abroad, I will always think of this class and this experience as a positive one, where I learned a lot about life and different cultures.

This movie taught me that people find their passion in many different ways. Some find it early in life, while others may take more time. Daniel's journey showed that fulfilling his true calling allowed him to embrace love and express himself authentically to Lena. It was inspiring to witness his pure happiness upon finding his passion for music. While I am not sure I have found my calling yet, Daniel's experience in the movie motivates me pursue my own path of happiness.

Today in class we started the movie "As it is in Heaven." We did not get very far into the movie, and Maydo warned us that the movie was a little slow moving. What I gained from the beginning of this movie is that it is about a conductor who is very unhappy with his life. He picks up and moves to a new town and escapes his old life. After this, we did not get very far into the movie, but it taught me that we need to be okay with taking risks and stepping outside our comfort zones, especially if we are unhappy where we are.

Cameron Herold's TED talk was very interesting to me today in class. He spoke about the importance of setting children up to be entrepreneurs. I feel that it is much more common today to teach children to participate in professions that already exist, like doctors and lawyers, but it is much less common to teach children to open their own businesses. Entrepreneurship gives much more freedom to do whatever you want and whatever will make you happy, which is much more important than earning a large salary.

Today, we watched a documentary on the 2008 economic crash. It was eye-opening to see how the troubles brewing in the United States were kept under wraps until they hit every day Americans hard. Learning that just three big banks had so mich power over the economy, and how their shady dealings caused many to lose everything, really made me question our blind trust in the government.  It was a stark reminder of how quickly things can go downhill when the wrong people are in charge.

For todays class, we were able to watch a video of a student get interviewed. She spoke very calm and fluid, while still having a powerful response. It was good to hear another student be interviewed, as we will all be entering the workforce soon and will have to be in that position in the near future. Watching another student taught me things I should and shouldn't be doing in that setting, and even things like what to wear and how to sit and speak!
